 | | The Gap - The Management Advantage #35from The Management Advantage Many hunters have that special spot on their farm where magic just seems to happen. For Casey, this spot is "The Gap". It just a simple opening in a fencerow that a pile of turkeys have been harvested at. Through the use of trail cameras and a some long range scouting, he was able to identify the number of longbeards on his farm and know what they're doing. On the day of the hunt, they tried to throw a curve ball by being worried about each other more than impressing a hen or responding to calling. After calling at them them for awhile, one finally broke to the decoys and met his demise while standing on top of the jake decoy. The weather has finally turned a little drier and Casey was able to help good friend, Jeff Butler of Full Draw Hunts, spray a new plot in preparation for some Eagle Forage Soybeans and Pennington seed. |

 | | Stir Crazy - The Management Advantage #34from The Management Advantage Turkey hunting and habitat work typically dominates our spring, but this year has been different. Mother nature has thrown curve ball after curve ball with unseasonably cool temperatures and flooding rains. This has left both the turkeys and the vegetation way behind schedule. The weather has put spring-time turkey behavior well behind schedule. Instead of gobblers being vocal throughout the entire day, they go quiet shortly after hitting the ground. Hunting has been tough to say the least. To compound things, Casey is hunting them with a bow. Turkey hunting is social both in the style of hunting, and also with the time you get to spend with friends and family. Over the years, we have be fortunate to get to spend many successful mornings with others. This week, we take a look back at a few successful hunts from the past, and a look into the start of the Illinois turkey season. |

 | | How To Get A Turkey Off Your Decoy - The Management Advantagefrom The Management Advantage There are some things in turkey hunting that are unexplained. You have hunts where a bird hangs up at 80 yards or hunts where a longbeard is coming in on a string, then suddenly runs away. This short clip falls into the "unexplained" category. A couple week's ago we had a jake mount a hen decoy while turkey hunting in Alabama. Despite Chuck's best efforts to get the jake to leave, he stayed on top of the hen decoy. Chuck then took the opportunity to see just how close he could get to the jake. Calling as he crawled, he was able to get just three feet away before the jake finally walked away while still gobbling down the ridge. |
